China Rose in Japan


China rose is a rose that originated in China and is known as the first oriental rose to be introduced to Western society.


It is known that it was introduced to Japan in the Heian period (794-1185), and it is estimated that the rose appears in classical literature such as The Tale of Genji.

Making Bara Tsumami

"Bara" means a rose in Japanese.

Here, you will learn how to create rose petals by using the modern technique of tsumami zaiku.

Making China Rose

After you finished making bara tsumami petals, you will learn how to form these petals into a China rose. There are several precise techniques to make it neat.

Assemble Into Kanzashi


After you finish making all the flowers, you will learn how to assemble them into small kanzashi by using paper tape or floral tape.
